Tokhi Driving Solutions

Failing your HR licence test sucks, honestly. You put in the hours, maybe took a day off work for it, walked in thinking you had this, and then… you didn’t. That’s a rough feeling to sit with.

But one bad test doesn’t mean you can’t drive a heavy rigid vehicle. It means something went sideways on the day, and most of the time, that’s fixable once you know what it actually was.

We see this a lot at Tokhi Driving Solutions, learners who just need to rebuild a bit of confidence and tighten up a specific skill or two before they go back. So if your HR test in Adelaide didn’t go how you wanted, here’s where to start.

1. Work Out What Actually Went Wrong

Don’t settle for “I just didn’t do well.” That tells you nothing. Get specific.

Was it your gear changes? Observation? Road positioning? Maybe reversing, or how you were reading traffic? Pin down the actual thing, not just the overall feeling of it going badly.

The SA Heavy Vehicle Driver’s Handbook spells out what the HR Vehicle on Road Test (VORT) covers, safe driving, gear changing, intersections, lane changes, hills, open-road driving, reversing. If you’re not sure where you lost marks, that list is basically your homework.

Booking another test straight away without figuring this out first? That’s just hoping for a different result from the same problem.

2. Don’t Rush Back In

Yeah, it’s tempting to lock in the next available date, especially if you need this licence for work and people are asking when you’ll have it.

Here’s the thing though, another test won’t magically fix whatever went wrong last time. Same mistakes, same outcome. That’s just how it works.

Give yourself real time to practise the specific stuff that tripped you up. A few focused sessions on your actual weak spots will do more for you than redoing the whole test from scratch and crossing your fingers.

3. Get Someone Else to Watch You Drive

This one’s underrated. An experienced instructor picks up on things you genuinely cannot see from inside the cab.

Maybe you think your gear changes are fine. Meanwhile someone watching from the passenger seat can see you’re changing a fraction too late, or losing a bit of control each time it happens. You don’t notice it because you’re the one driving, it’s just how it feels from in there. That’s exactly the kind of gap that costs people on test day.

At Tokhi, we’re not about teaching a test route. We’re about actual driving skills and real vehicle control.

Want someone to sit with you and tell you straight what’s holding you back? Book a session with Tokhi Driving Solutions and let’s find it before your next go.

4. Get the Basics So Solid They’re Automatic

Before you book again, the fundamentals need to be second nature. Not something you’re still thinking through mid-manoeuvre.

That’s things like:

  • Smooth gear changes and vehicle control
  • Correct mirror and observation checks
  • Safe lane changes
  • Appropriate road positioning
  • Intersections and staying aware of traffic
  • Reversing and manoeuvring
  • Hill starts and open-road driving
  • Knowing the heavy vehicle road rules cold

You’re not aiming to hope it all comes together on the day. You’re aiming to make it so consistent that nerves can’t shake it loose.

5. Know Your Options in South Australia

In SA, you can get your HR licence two ways, either a Vehicle on Road Test (VORT) or Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBT) with an authorised instructor. To apply, you’ve got to be at least 19, and you need to have held a Class C licence for two years minimum, or an LR or MR licence for at least one.

If you went the VORT route and it didn’t go your way, talk to your examiner. They just watched you drive. That’s better feedback than anything you’ll figure out guessing on your own.

One Failed Test Doesn’t Set You Back

A failed HR test stings, no way around that. But it also gives you something useful, a pretty clear map of exactly where you need more work.

Take the feedback on board, actually fix what caused it, and make sure you’re genuinely ready before you go again. This was never just about passing a test. It’s about becoming a driver who’s actually safe and confident behind the wheel.
